Benthic Habitat Mapping, Laurentian Channel

Earlier this month, Seaforth completed a high-resolution multibeam and sub-bottom profile survey of the St. Anns Bank & Laurentian Channel for the Department of Fisheries & Oceans Canada (DFO).  The area of interest is ecologically and biologically significant; selected for a potential establishment of Marine Protected Area (MPA) status. Knowledge of the seafloor diversity through acquisition of multibeam bathymetry, backscatter and sub-bottom profiler data provides environmental baseline information. Accurate data on seafloor diversity will aid in understanding the ecosystem, assist in boundary delineation of the MPA and provide a baseline to assess changes to species and habitat in the area over time.
