Seaforth was contracted by the Maritime Fisherman’s Union (MFU) to conduct geophysical surveys in search of abandoned / lost Ghost Gear in multiple locations around Pictou, NS. The project is part of ongoing efforts to efficiently, locate and identify ghost gear, for later removal, in Nova Scotia waters.
Seaforth conducted surveys in October of both 2022 and 2023. An Edgetech 4205 sidescan sonar was used to conduct the surveys During both surveys, Seaforth utilized local vessels of opportunity and partnered with local fishers to take advantage of their local knowledge for the best locations to search for ghost gear. As a result, almost 900 potential ghost gear targets were identified between the two surveys campaigns.
